With so many high profile cases of people, neglecting their animals I thought it might be a good time to discuss proper care of pets. What bothers me the most about these incidences is that people seem to genuinely think they have not done anything wrong. If you have any doubts as to what is proper care of an animal, look no further.
Here is a list of appropriate care for an animal.
Know your animal. Each type of pet is different and so is each breed. Purchase a good instructional book and get to know all of the health and behavioral quirks of your pet. Care for them accordingly.
All pets must be fed according to type and breed instructions. You can get this information from your veterinarian. Consult your pet’s doctor if you plan to make any major changes in their diet.
Animals need the same heat and cooling conditions as humans. They are especially susceptible to heat. If it is too hot for you to sit in a car with the air conditioner off, then it is too hot for your pet. In the winter, some breeds of dogs actually need and appreciate jackets.
You must keep your animal clean and groomed. Neglecting to care for your pet’s coats can do more damage than just causing them to be dirty. Tooth decay, heart problems, skin lesions, and paw problems can result from lax care.
Have your pets spayed or neutered. This will help the temperament of your pet in addition to preventing your dog from making babies that you cannot or do not want to take care of.
Obey leash laws. While you may think that your pet will never do anything wrong, you never know what is going to happen should another unleashed pet come along.
Disease Prevention: Make sure your pet has a yearly checkup and that important immunizations are given.
Here is a list of what is considered abuse:
Neglect: failing to do any of the things listed above to the best of your abilities is considered abuse.
Fighting: Whether it is cocks or dogs, pet fighting is abuse and generally illegal.
Beating: Animals should not be beat for transgressions. There are other ways to train animals without violence.
Tying an animal outside for an extended period, in very hot or cold weather is abuse. In some states, leaving a pet tied outside is illegal.
Abandonment: If you find that you cannot take care of a pet for any reason, do not abandon it. Find a new home for it or take it to a pound where they can find a suitable home.
